A Pest IT course, built with Peter McCarthy, on bird jobs going back to 1994.

The Bird Management Course

Most people arrive here with a job on Thursday, not a study plan. So this page starts with your week, not our syllabus: pick the door that sounds like the job in front of you. The Bird Management Course teaches you to read a site, name the bird and pick the system the pressure calls for: everything we have learned keeping birds off buildings, crops and solar. It is written for the people doing the work and the people paying for it. Every lesson is named on this page, so you can see the shape of it before you give it your time.

Four ways in

Find the one that matches the job in front of you.

You are on the tools this week

Netting a face, spiking a ledge, running wire along a heritage parapet. Mesh sizes, substrates and fixings: which system holds where, and why, so you can stand behind the install on the day.

You are scoping and quoting

A bird job is won or lost at the quote. Walk the site, read how committed the birds are to it, and turn that read into a component list and a quote you can send with confidence.

You look after a site that already has a bird system

For facilities, food sites and venues. What a bird job looks like when it is holding, what to ask your contractor for, and how to tell the system on your site matches the pressure it is up against, so the first you hear of trouble is not an audit or a complaint.

You are protecting a crop, a shed or an array

For growers, packers and anyone with birds under panels. The season does not wait: read the pressure early, match the system to the bird and the structure, and have it up before the window closes.

The course is a Pest IT build, developed with Peter McCarthy, and it draws on a field record of bird jobs across Australia and New Zealand going back to 1994. Winged Menace: A Guide to Pest Bird Management (2021), by Peter McCarthy and Dr Sali Bache, informed the framework, and lessons cite it where it did. Where the field record has moved past the page, the lesson follows the field, and where Peter is quoted, the lesson says so. On law, chemicals and animal welfare, the lessons point you at the current source, because those move.

Shutting Them Out: Exclusion and Netting

You walk a face or a courtyard, choose the mesh and the fixings the substrate and the species call for, and turn a site walk into a component list. Lessons 19 to 25.

Moving Them On: Deterrence Systems

Birds and Solar

You scope and quote panel exclusion on a home array or a commercial one, work to the access and height requirements the site sets, and show the owner what the birds under the panels are doing to it. Lessons 34 to 37.

Trapping and Population Management

Send us what you find

This course gets better every time the trade writes into it. If you have walked onto a site where the pressure was far higher than it looked from the ground, or you have a system that is still holding years after you put it in, we would like to see it. Photo, species, what you did and what held.

Send it only if you are free to share it: no client name, no address, nothing your customer would not want published. If we use it here we will ask you first and credit you by name. We read what comes in, and we cannot promise to publish everything. How we handle what you send is in our privacy policy.
